The simplest character-state reconstruction indicated that delayed plumage maturation arose four to six times on the Sibley and Ahlquist tree, once each in Sibley et al.'s (1988) plover and gull groups (the Charadrioidea and Laroidea, respectively) and two to four times in their sandpiper group (the Scolopacida).
