Climate change has made its way to the peaks of Tirich Mir (the highest peak) and its three major glaciers;
Chiantar, Kurambar, and Terich.
Northern Pakistan has some of the longest glaciers outside the polar region: Siachen (72 kilometers), Hispar (61 kilometers), Biafo (60 kilometers), Baltoro (60 kilometers), Batura (64 kilometers), Yenguta (35 kilometers),
Chiantar (34 kilometers), Trich (29 kilometers), and Atrak (28 kilometers).
The climate change specialists are apprehensive about the situation in Baroghil area which is home to Chiantar glacier, the largest one in Hindukush belt and containing the largest peatland.
Fazle Haq, a local environmentalist, said that the GHG emitted due to depletion of peatland at a high rate could spell disaster in Baroghil area because of its proximity to Chiantar glacier, which was the main source of Chitral River, known as Kabul River in the plains of Peshawar.
Junaid said that he held meeting with the local organizer of the festival
Chiantar Welfare Society Broghil, Deputy Commissioner Upper and Lower Chitral so to make things in appropriate manners by developing an easy access to the tourists.
He said all the five proposed destinations had fabulous attraction for the tourists which included the Wakhi culture of Baroghil, its unique landscape and the legendary Qarambara Lake and the
Chiantar glacier.
