(chōlôn`, Fr. shôlôN`), district and former city, since 1932 part of Ho Chi Minh CityHo Chi Minh City,
formerly Saigon,
city (1997 pop. 5,250,000), on the right bank of the Saigon River, a tributary of the Dong Nai, Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city, the greatest port, and the commercial and industrial center of Vietnam.

Founded c.1780 by Chinese immigrants seeking to escape the civil disorders of Annam, it became a busy trading port long before Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) was developed by the French. It is still largely Chinese, containing a large portion of Vietnam's entire Chinese population, despite the large exodus of ethnic Chinese as boat peopleboat people,
term used to describe the Indochinese refugees who fled Communist rule after the Vietnam War (1975) in small boats and the many ethnic Chinese who left Vietnam similarly after China's invasion of Vietnam in 1979. More than one million people became refugees.
