Evert, (Christine Marie) Chris

(1954–  ) tennis player; born in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Between 1974 and 1986, she won at least one Grand Slam singles championship every year, a record. She won the French singles championship seven times, Wimbledon three times, the U.S. Open six times, and the Australian twice. During her career, she won 157 professional singles titles, including many memorable competitions with her chief rival, Martina Navratilova. Her coolness under pressure on the courts earned her the nickname "Ice Maiden."
