DeShazer's plane, the Bat Out of Hell dropped its bombs at Nagova but ran out of fuel before reaching Chuchow. Fourteen hours into the flight the engines stopped, and the crew jumped at 8,000 feet into the dark, foggy, wet night hoping to land into friendly Chinese territory.
The plan was to sail to within 400 miles of Japan and take off, hit their targets and fly on to Chuchow. But they were spotted by a picket boat 650 miles from the Japanese coast.
As Doolittle flew on, he tried to contact Chuchow, where he expected to find a welcoming airfield.
