the closed fruiting body of certain ascomycetous fungi (order Plectascales and the powdery mildews, family Erysiphaceae).
Cleistocarps are spherical and have an envelope without any openings called a peridium. The asci and spores are freed after this envelope bursts or is destroyed. Cleistocarps are sometimes called cleistothecia.
