In this research, there were two hypotheses: that coccolithophora, a golden-brown algae that dominate polar oceans, would absorb more C[O.sub.2] than they would release, giving a net loss of C[O.sub.2] in the surrounding air, and that coccolithophora fertilized with F[e.sup.3+] would grow and absorb C[O.sub.2] in a direct proportion to the concentration of the [Fe.sup.3+].
