In eastern KS, east of Emporia; organized Aug 25, 1855 (prior to statehood) from Kiowa County. Name Origin: For Col. Asbury M. Coffey, a Confederate officer and settler from MO; first known white man in KS; served as a member of the Bogus Legislature in 1855
