Compressor stall: The compressor blade on the right is in stalled condition.
A condition in which the compressor blades stall as the relative airflow meets the blades beyond the critical angle. This can happen at start-up, during rapid acceleration from low RPM, or during a sudden reduction of mass airflow, when a few or all the stages of compressor blades can stall. A compressor stall can also take place during maneuvers as a result of airflow interference in the intake, especially at high angles of attack and low forward speeds. When only a few blades stall, some fluttering or rumbling sounds are heard. However, if the compressor disc stalls, a loud explosive sound is heard followed by a decay in engine RPM and a rapid rise in exhaust gas temperatures. A compressor stall may result in flameout.

This in turn causes the plane to lift its nose, which triggers a compressor stall in the worst case scenario, which in turn can lead to a crash.
Numerical studies of axial compressors [18, 19] showed that this criterion gives good results in predicting compressor stall. Centrifugal compressors may be able to operate into the left of the peak pressure ratio, but compressors will be in minor surge in this condition [20], and compressor outlet and inlet flow conditions will be pulsating and unsteady.
Second, interpolation routines in map-based approaches fail to yield precise solutions near critical operating points, such as compressor stall lines, due to unknown data outside of the stall point.
Analysis later verified engine #2 suffered a compressor stall and pieces of the canopy were found in engine #2.
He outlined some of the indicators to pilots that they have hit a bird; eg, visual, tactile, auditory (engine surge, compressor stall), and olfactory (smell of cooked bird), flight instruments indicators, and anomalies coming from other aircraft systems or structures.
Approximately 10 minutes after departure from Djibouti, Darkhorse 33 experienced an audible bang with associated yaw kick indicating a compressor stall. The pilot at the controls immediately began to slow down and the non-flying pilot scanned the gauges with the crew chief.
After P&W experts in Hartford had reviewed the data from each test flight, their engineers would further modify the stall margin as appropriate, and we would fly again to perform the same maneuver to evaluate the change to compressor stall boundaries.
A compressor stall was later deemed to be the cause of the incident as of 4 May 2009.
A properly arranged gas injection near the blade tips has proved to increase axial compressor stall margin, leading to a relatively wider operating range and a better operability.
At 400 feet in IMC their number one engine suffered a compressor stall. Everything shook so hard the instrument panel was a blur.
Engines flying through the volcanic ash cloud risk impaired compressor performance or even a compressor stall, as well as damage to the high-pressure turbine blades and the turbine nozzle as a result of overheating, manufacturer CFM International has warned.
