Germany gets 15% of its electricity from windfarms but because of their unreliablility have not been able to shut down even one conventional power
Indeed, wind generation, for a guaranteed supply, relies almost totally on back-up by conventional power
There has to be conventional power
stations in spinning reserve for when the wind is not strong enough or too strong to produce electricity.
This happens quite often here as well, and so we shall still need all of our conventional power
stations 'just in case'.
Wind does not need "conventional power
stations to be on 24hr standby"!
What utter nonsense when full back-up must be available from conventional power
stations for 75% of the time when the wind doesn't blow.
But bear this in mind: conventional power
stations have to remain on hot spinning reserve, burning fuel and pumping out greater CO2 emissions, waiting to kick in if the wind blows too strong or weak.
The mere fact that these monsters operate at only 19% of their claimed capacity - due to wind variation - and require constant back-up by conventional power
stations, makes it impossible to comprehend such vandalism.
Unless any of the proposed renewable sources are consistent enough to allow us to completely shutdown conventional power
stations they will continue to simply duplicate power we have already burnt fossil fuel to produce
