In central eastern NC, northeast of Jacksonville; organized Dec 3, 1705 (prior to statehood) as Archdale Precinct of Bath District, although there is evidence that an Archdale County had existed since 1696. Name changed 1712. Name Origin: Probably for William (1668-1711), 2nd Earl of Craven, who died the year before the name changed. Others claim the 1st Earl (1606-97), an original lord proprietor of Carolina, or the 3rd Earl, one of the proprietors when the name was changed. Originally named for John Archdale (1642?-1717), a lord proprietor and governor of Carolina (1694-96)
