Green Umbrella

green plantings of the island type created to protect farm animals against overheating (from high temperature, low relative humidity, and direct solar radiation).

Green umbrellas (or canopies) were first used in the USSR, in the Trans-Volga Region, in 1958 on pastures and in live-stock sections of farms. The area of the plot under a green umbrella may range from 0.5 to 1.2 hectares, depending on the number of cattle (or poultry). The trees that form a green umbrella are arranged in groups (microumbrellas) 4–6 m apart. The microumbrellas are divided by small (10 m wide) and large (20 m wide) wind corridors. Green umbrellas improve the habitat of animals and increase both their resistance to unfavorable conditions and their productivity.
