Craig Fletcher, founder and CEO of Cubewano, said: "Another supplier was originally building the engine for the US Army's Class 1 increment 2 project, but the turbine suffered catastrophic failure so we were brought in to design, test and deliver a brand new engine with very aggressive weight targets - all in less than two years.
Like other larger rotating Wankel engines, the Cubewano design also employs a triangular rotor that incorporates a central ring gear driven around a fixed pinion within an oval-like housing, while apex seals at the corners of the rotor seal against the periphery of the housing, dividing it into separate moving combustion chambers.
The judges praised Mr Addy, now R&D manager for Cubewano, for his unfaltering commitment, commenting that "whilst it can be a 9 to 5 occupation for some, those who create the best designs don't recognise the constraints of the clock."
In his current role at Cubewano, he perfected a small heavy fuel rotary engine with a high power to weight ratio which has been successfully used in a project for the US military.
The generator is based on rotary engine technology developed by Cubewano for the next generation of unmanned air vehicles for the US armed forces.
The appointment builds on an informal relationship formed with Cubewano co-founders Craig Fletcher and Shaun Addy seven years earlier.
Last year, Cubewano completed a multi-million dollar contract supplying its engines to the US Army, and has since then adapted its core technology to create a new portable generator which can be carried into theatre by a soldier.
His roster includes Birmingham Royal Ballet, Cubewano, Goodyear Dunlop, QRky and Urban Coffee Company.
Sutton Coldfield engine maker Cubewano has created Hornet, a generator which weighs just 28lb and can be carried by one person but produces one kilowatt of power.

Cubewano, winner of the Manufacturing, Science and Technology category at last year's Birmingham Post Awards, has wowed the US Army with the world's lightest and smallest engine to run on heavy fuel.
After only three years, small engine manufacturer Cubewano has established itself as a force in specialist markets around the world.
