A new high-temperature cast aluminum alloy 351 has been registered with the Aluminum Association by Alcoa and recently was studied for semi-permanent mold cast cylinder heads. In the study, the 351 alloy showed a significant improvement in high temperature tensile properties, particularly in creep resistance in comparison with the commonly used cylinder head aluminum alloy A356+0.5%Cu.

In operation, the aluminum heads are manually loaded onto the rotating fixture plate over locators that fit into holes on the bottom of the cylinder head. The fixture is locked in place, and the marking head is actuated to automatically peen mark the six numbers on the bearing cap exterior surfaces.
To facilitate these operations, and in a further departure for Hatz, inlet and exhaust valves are actuated via ball-pin rockers with cam side rollers from an overhead camshaft located beyond the circumference of the cylinder heads and driven by a long-life duplex chain.
A manifold is the main distributor of air and fuel to the cylinder heads; by making adjustments to the manifold a race team can generate more torque for short tracks or higher horsepower for high-speed tracks.
