And the best thing about the DS4 is that you get all that performance with the bonus of a more spacious interior than the MINI and a sensible sized boot.
But while the smaller DS3 was conceived as a straight rival to BMW''s Mini, the C4-derived DS4 has no obvious direct competitors as it combines its coupe looks with a five-door practicality and the raised driving position of a SUV.
The DS4 is a five-door hatch that looks like a coupe, thanks in part, to cleverly designed rear door handles which are built into the rear window frames to disguise them so the car looks like a two-door.
I don't know whether I would agree with that, but the DS4 is certainly a stylish motor and a giant step up from the company's rather mundane C4 on which it is based.
"The DS4 is the second vehicle of the DS line introduced by CitroEaA1/2n, and we look forward to continuing to work with PSA as it expands and re-invents its product lines."
THE Citroen DS4 was a desirable sporty five-door hatchback that proudly claimed not to conform to any established market segment.
A DS4 is very different from Citroen's simply-styled C4 family hatchback upon which this design is based, a car which is 60mm shorter and 40mm taller and manufactured in the same French Mulhouse factory.
THE DS4 offers a stylish twist on the family hatch theme and in improved THP 165 guise, it offers a tempting alternative to the more pragmatic diesel-engined versions.
