Dhahran

(därän`, dä'hərän`), city (1993 pop. 73,691), NE Saudi Arabia, near the Persian Gulf. Since the discovery (1938) of oil nearby, it has grown rapidly into a modern city. In Dhahran are the headquarters of the Arabian American Oil Co. (ARAMCO), the office of the Saudi petroleum ministry, and the Univ. of Petroleum and Minerals. During the Persian Gulf WarPersian Gulf Wars,
two conflicts involving Iraq and U.S.-led coalitions in the late 20th and early 21st cent.

 the city's air base, the largest in Saudi Arabia, was used by coalition forces, and the area was subjected to Iraqi missile attacks. In 1996 a truck bomb at the Saudi base, which also housed foreign military personnel, killed 19 Americans and wounded more than 400 people.

(al-Zahran), a city in Saudi Arabia, 8 km from the coast of the Persian Gulf. Population, approximately 13,000. Dhahran has a railway station; it is linked by highway with the ports of al-Khubar, al-Dammam. Ra’s al-Tannurah, al-Jubayl, and also the states of Kuwait and Iraq. It is a center for the extraction of petroleum; the management of the US oil company Aramco is in Dhahran. It has an airport and a US military and air base.
