. Rice, coconuts, and rubber are grown, and fish are caught. The population is mainly Malay. Before the 19th cent. Terengganu was the vassal state of the powers that in turn dominated the Malay Peninsula. The influence of Siam upon Terengganu grew during the 19th cent., although the sultan of Terengganu maintained his independence. According to the terms of the Anglo-Siamese treaty of 1909, Terengganu became a British protectorate. Until the establishment of the Federation of Malaya (1948), it was classed as one of the Unfederated Malay States. See MalaysiaMalaysia

Terengganu

 

a state governed by a sultan in Malaysia, on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula. Area, 13,000 sq km. Population, 405,000. Kuala Terengganu is the capital of Terengganu. Most of the state is covered with forests; economic activity is concentrated on the coast and in river valleys. The economy is based on the cultivation of rubber trees, rice, oil palms, and coconut palms. There is coastal fishing. Other economic activities include the mining of iron ore for export, the processing of agricultural raw materials, and the production of various hand-crafted articles.
