Developed by
DataDot Technology (www.datadotdna.com),
DataDots are the size of sand grains, and can contain identification numbers that can be linked to product serial numbers and relevant owner information, such as company name, business registration, or Social Security numbers.
Other technologies include marking systems that affix a nearly invisible but unique identification code to the machine (such as micro-dots from
DataDot and radio-frequency identification [RFID] micro-chips) and "smart" keys utilizing individual operator passcodes to ensure that only authorized operators can start the equipment.
In response re an increase in the theft of Xenon headlights, which are very costly to replace, Nissan has allied with law enforcement agencies to the Northeast and Seattle-based
DataDot Technologies USA to combat the problem.
