Davis,

city (1990 pop. 46,209), Yolo co., central Calif.; settled in the 1850s, inc. 1917. It is an education center with light industry; machinery, processed foods, and computer equipment are produced. The extensive Univ. of California at Davis, which has a major agricultural research center as well as schools of law, medicine, and engineering and the Mondavi performing arts center, is there. The National Primate Center and a university of Native American and Chicano cultures are also in Davis; Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument is nearby.

a scientific station, a base of the Australian antarctic expedition. It is located on the southeastern shore of Prydz Bay (eastern Antarctica) on Vestfold Oasis (68° 31’ S lat., 77° 58’ E long.). Established in 1957; it was temporarily inactive from 1964 to 1969. The station is manned by four to ten people. Glaciological, aerometeorological, oceanographic, biological, and geological observations are conducted there. It was named in honor of J. K. Davis, captain of the expedition ship Aurora.
