De Bary, Heinrich Anton

Born Jan. 26, 1831, in Frankfurt am Main; died Jan. 19, 1888, in Strasbourg. German botanist. Professor at the universities of Freiburg (from 1855), Halle (from 1867), and Strasbourg (from 1872).

De Bary’s works laid the basis for modern mycology and plant pathology. He elucidated the heterotrophic nature of the nourishment of fungi, determined that parasitic fungi cause diseases in higher plants, and discovered and studied the sexual process in many types of fungi (Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes). He also studied the developmental cycle of Uredinales and proposed the first phylogenetic system of fungi. De Bary was the author of a number of works on the comparative anatomy of higher plants. Among his pupils were the Russian botanists M. S. Voronin, A. S. Famintsyn. and V. I. Beliaev.
