## Dean number

[′dēn ‚nəm·bər]
(fluid mechanics)
A dimensionless number giving the ratio of the viscous force acting on a fluid flowing in a curved pipe to the centrifugal force; equal to the Reynolds number times the square root of the ratio of the radius of the pipe to its radius of curvature. Symbolized ND.

Based on the flow line Reynolds number, the bend Dean number can be calculated by
Both the Dean number and Reynolds number are useful to nondimensionally depict the bend particle flow and deposition phenomena, and they can be determined by accurate measurement of the bend geometry, background gas property, and flow velocity.
measured and quantified the nanoparticle penetration efficiency in 90[degrees] bends for different Reynolds numbers (Re = 4500-10,500), Dean numbers (De = 1426-2885), Stokes numbers, and curvature ratios [24].
Dean pointed out that Dean vortex generate as the result of the interaction of centrifugal force with viscous force borne by fluid in the pipe; thus, a dimensionless number which is called Dean number is defined as the ratio of centrifugal force to viscous force [19].
