The segment of certain letters which extends below the general level of cross-alignment with other letters; for example, the lower part of “g” or “y.”

A lowercase letter that extends below the base line, such as "g", "j", or "p". Also used to denote the part of the letter extending below the base line. Compare ascender.

descenderThe part of lower case characters g, j, p, q and y that fall below the line. Sometimes these characters are displayed and printed with shortened descenders in order to fit into a smaller character cell, making them difficult to read. See typeface.
