Dellums, Ronald (Vernie)

(1935–  ) U.S. representative; born in Oakland, Calif. An ex-marine and social worker, in Congress (Dem., Cal.; 1972) he championed civil liberties and opposed military aggression while serving on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees. As an African-American, he was often a harsh critic of the white power establishment.
