The first projects undertaken by the new group include digitalme
, an identity management service that leverages NDS technology to enable consumers to take control of how their personal information is used and maintained on the Internet.
Initially Novell will integrate programs for managing and monitoring performance and bandwidth and for creating personal identity servers that could cache employee or customer profiles like those created with its DigitalMe
system introduced last week.
The company has built what's effectively a 'cookie jar' called DigitalMe
on top of Novell Directory Services (NDS) which consumers can get their hands on through the portals, ASPs, ISPs and retailers Novell hopes will buy DigitalMe
, but more importantly, the NDS server it runs on.
A major target for this work would be Novell Inc's Digitalme
infomediary-enabling tool, which is written in Java.
Meantime, Novell says its only plan to pursue open source technology development at the moment is to make the Digitalme
client available under an open source model.
But we have learned that it will be a combination of the Digitalme
personal privacy technology, which is based on Novell Directory Services (NDS), IBM's WebSphere application server and tools, Novell's Border Manager security software and Novell's Java virtual machine.
