, Tetum Timor Lorosae, republic, officially Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (2015 est. pop. 1,241,000), 5,950 sq mi (15,410 sq km), in the Lesser Sundas, Malay Archipelago, off the SE Asia mainland.

Soap, perfume, and pottery are produced, and coffee is processed. In World War II, Dili was occupied by the Japanese from Feb., 1942, until end of the war. Much of the city was destroyed in the violence following the 1999 vote for East Timorese independence. The Univ. of East Timor is there.

Dili
a city and port on the northern coast of the island of Timor. Population, 18,800 (1965). Dili is a center for the production of soap, perfume, and pottery, as well as for the processing of coffee. Cotton, coffee, copra, rubber, wool, and leather are exported.
