divorce rate

the number of divorces per year divided by the total population, usually expressed as a rate per 1000. Other measures divide the number of divorces by the number of marriages. Although sometimes used as an indicator of social stability or social disorganization, the implications of changes in the divorce rate are open to wide differences of interpretation.
