a council area in SW Scotland: created in 1975 from the counties of Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, and Wigtown; became a unitary authority in 1996; chiefly agricultural. Administrative centre: Dumfries. Pop.: 147 210 (2003 est.). Area: 6439 sq. km (2486 sq. miles)
