K4Fe(CN)6·3H2O Yellow crystals with saline taste; soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol; loses water at 60°C; used in medicine, dry colors, explosives, and as an analytical reagent. Also known as yellow prussiate of potash.

Potassium Ferrocyanide


potassium hexacyanoferro-ate, K4[Fe(CN)6]⋅3H2O, a complex iron (II) compound; light yellow crystals that remain stable in air. Density, 1.85 g/cm3.

Potassium ferrocyanide was first obtained by heating horns, hooves, and blood with K2C03 and iron filings. It is used as a reagent for Fe3+ ions, with which it forms the blue precipitate Prussian blue, Fe 4[[Fe(CN)6].3. Potassium ferrocyanide is also of use in other branches of analytical chemistry. In industry it is used in the manufacture of paints, K3[Fe(CN)6].
