We have worked with support of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program to create this white paper on Earth system science frontiers, based on results from a WMO-funded workshop in October 2015 in Offenbach, Germany.
We believe that a vision of Earth system science must start from continuity, that is, sustaining the long-term development of infrastructure that is required by the global research community to answer the questions that society will be raising in the future.
To work on the aforementioned fundamental research, sustained and--where possible--increased funding for Earth system science will be required.
Some key research issues in Earth system science, such as long-term observational consistency or persistent modeling problems, suffer from the short-term "attention span" of public funding.
The overall vision of the ESSO is to excel in knowledge and technology enterprise for the earth system science realm towards socio-economic benefit of the Indian sub-continent and in the Indian Ocean region.
Christopher successfully designed a master's-level graduate program in Earth system science that educates and trains graduate students in new paradigms involving research to decision making.
AMS embraces this interdisciplinary philosophy and encourages the application of Earth system science as a core element of this approach.
The most widespread type of climate is hot desert, which covers 14.2 percent of Earth's land, the researchers report in an upcoming Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. The second most common is tropical savannah, which accounts for 11.5 percent.
With the change of the name of the journal our geological community wishes to emphasize that we support an increasing trend in Earth sciences, which can be formulated as strengthening of interaction and complexity of disciplines known as Earth system sciences. At the same time we see that the evolution of Earth systems, especially those highlighted by the science programme of the International Year of Planet Earth, results from the global and regional components of interacting processes.
Containerized modeling is a good idea born of a thinking that is somewhat counterintuitive within Earth system sciences. These sciences tend to emphasize the opposite--an increased engagement at the messy edges and interfaces.
In all, there were seven technical sessions on agriculture and life science, health sciences, ecology and environment, physical science, engineering for development, earth system sciences and science and technology education.
