earth leakage circuit breaker

An earlier circuit breaker that tripped when a difference in voltage was detected between the in-house ground (water pipes, etc.) and a ground rod or the ground line from the electric company. Earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) were replaced by "residual current devices" (see residual current device).
