(ēst`mān), river, c.510 mi (820 km) long, rising in the Otish Mts., central Que., Canada, and flowing W into James Bay. Three miles (4.8 km) from its mouth is East Main (founded 1685), one of the oldest Hudson's Bay Company posts.
Food use and nutrient intake were studied with Cree women of Wemindji and Eastmain, Quebec. During summer 1994 and winter 1995, 24-hour recalls and food frequency questionnaires were collected from 219 women of three age groups (20-40; 41-60; >60 years).
