In east-central NC, northeast of Goldsboro; organized Apr 4, 1741 (prior to statehood) from Bertie County, although deeds began in 1732. Name Origin: For Richard Edgecumbe (1680-1758), later 1st Baron Edgecumbe, English statesman. Present spelling is now accepted
