Lindeman began working at the Pulkovo Observatory in 1868. He devoted himself to the study of stellar brightness. On the basis of observations made between 1870 and 1883, he refined the value of the photometric coefficient, that is, the ratio of the brightnesses of stars of two neighboring stellar magnitudes. In 1895, Lindeman compiled the first photometric catalog of the h Persei star cluster.
