Carson, Edward Henry


Born Feb. 9, 1854, in Dublin; died Oct. 22, 1935, in Minster, Kent. Baron (from 1921), British politician, member of the Conservative Party.

Carson was a lawyer by education and a leader of the IrishUnionists. He created armed detachments, the so-called UlsterVolunteers, in Ulster in 1912 to oppose the national liberationmovement in Ireland. He was naval minister of Great Britain in1915 and minister without portfolio in 1917–18. He stronglysupported the partition of Ireland in 1921 and the preservationof British rule in Ulster.
