## electromagnetism

1. magnetism produced by an electric current
2. the branch of physics concerned with magnetism produced by electric currents and with the interaction of electric and magnetic fields

## Electromagnetism

The branch of science dealing with the observations and laws relating electricity to magnetism. Electromagnetism is based upon the fundamental observations that a moving electric charge produces a magnetic field and that a charge moving in a magnetic field will experience a force. The magnetic field produced by a current is related to the current, the shape of the conductor, and the magnetic properties of the medium around it by Ampère's law. The magnetic field at any point is described in terms of the force that it exerts upon a moving charge at that point. The electrical and magnetic units are defined in terms of the ampere, which in turn is defined from the force of one current upon another. The association of electricity and magnetism is also shown by electromagnetic induction, in which a changing magnetic field sets up an electric field within a conductor and causes the charges to move in the conductor. 5-kilometer-long transceiver cables -- one sending electric waves and the other receiving the waves -- set up in parallel around the area to be monitored plus a censor which detects any distortion in electric wave signals received by the receiver cable.
What began as tinkering with an obscure device (Reiss, or Knochenhauer spirals) evolved slowly - and contingently - to produce a dipole oscillator and resonator, a source of electric waves whose possible theoretical resonances Hertz only then began to trace.
Electric Waves and Richard Mullen put the event to bed at the onefurlong pole and she was good value for her length-and-a-quarter superiority over Sweet Cecily.
Data for each piece of baggage with an IC-embedded claim tag are read by a device using electric waves, the officials said, adding the system was developed at low cost by making use of a special printing technology.
The device consists of four antennas and as many transmitters and receivers and narrows the range of electric waves used for communication between two terminals by adjusting signals from each antenna.
Ed McMahon won the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot last October with Electric Waves and he is targeting the race again with Artistic Jewel, who took the 5f maiden fillies' stakes on her debut under Graham Gibbons, overturning odds-on Royal Red by an easy two and three-quarter lengths.
The system will use integrated circuit (IC) chips in place of bar codes to identify baggage checked at airports, allowing bags to be sorted by electric waves, according to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.
JR East, which currently requests that passengers not use cellular phones, will institute a total ban during rush hours as the phones' electric waves could cause malfunctioning of such medical equipment as pacemakers and as complaints about the phones have been increasing, railway officials said.
He added: "She only cost pounds 9,000 and reminds me a lot of Electric Waves, who I bought for pounds 8,000 and did very well for us last year.
The Gay Kelleway-trained Amica appears to face a big task under Royston Ffrench, while Richard Mullen is reunited with Electric Waves, on whom he won the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes for Ed McMahon last year before her 200,000gns sale at Tattersalls.
Naif Alatawi has a couple of familiar names nominated for Saudi Arabia, having paid 320,000gns for Jeremy Noseda's Railway Stakes winner Formosina and 200,000gns for the speedy Electric Waves, a Group 3 winner for Ed McMahon.
Saudi Arabian-based trainer Naif Alatawi also has a couple of familiar names ready for the carnival, having paid 320,000gns for Noseda's Railway S t a ke s w i n n e r Formosina and 200,000gns for the speedy Electric Waves, a Group 3 winner for Ed McMahon.
