On the north-central border of IN; organized Jan 29, 1830 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the Elkhart River, named for the Elkhart Indians. Name is probably a translation of either a Potawatomi or Kickapoo term for 'elk's heart', early English spelling was Elksheart
