Speaking of busy nebulous fields, one of my favorites is the region around the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), which is full of splashy star clusters like M52 and other emission nebulae. Amid all these sparkling jewels, it's easy to overlook little HH 170.
Several of the finest emission nebulae for mid-northern observers are located in the Sagittarius Milky Way.
Imaging in hydrogen-alpha (H-alpha) has two advantages: it allows great contrast to be obtained in emission nebulae, which often emit strongly in this spectral line, and it also bypasses the problem of light pollution, because an H-alpha filter blocks out all other wavelengths.
Caption: The diffuse emission nebulae Sh 2-120 and Sh 2-121 are subtle glows ensconced in the dust clouds at the periphery of the Le Gentil 3 dark nebula complex in northeastern Cygnus.
Small, bright planetary nebulae, as well as some emission nebulae, can be captured well in a bright sky and found on most any night of the year.
But unlike giant emission nebulae such as the Orion Nebula (M42), they don't glow from the ionization of hydrogen.
Instead of combining individual frames taken through red, green, and blue filters, photographers employ filters that isolate the wavelengths of light produced by ionized gases in emission nebulae. False-color photographs assembled from images taken through these filters are much more colorful than natural-color images.
One of these can dramatically improve the appearance of emission nebulae and will also improve many planetary nebulae.
The emission nebulae Sharpless 2-61 resides 1.1[degrees] west of the 7th-magnitude star near NGC 6682's edge.
It's true you'll rarely see the reds and pinks of emission nebulae, but many planetary nebulae display surprisingly vivid colors.

A deep look into Orion's famous sword reveals a cascade of deep-sky targets from top to bottom, including the reflection nebulae NGC 1973/75/77, the bright emission nebulae M43 and M42, and tiny NGC 1999 at center, as well as many large, undesignated bands of gas and dust.
