Large and heavily sclerotized forms typically occur in families of the superfamily Ephydroidea, namely in the Ephydridae (including Risa Becker), Diastatidae, Camillidae (in part) and Curtonotidae (in part) (see references in Kotrba & Mathis (2009)).
