Born July 23, 1824, in Sandewalde, Silesia; died July 5, 1907, in Heidelberg. German philosophical historian. Hegelian.
Fischer was a professor at the University of Jena from 1856 to 1871 and at the University of Heidelberg from 1872 to 1906. His main work was the ten-volume History of Recent Philosophy (1852–77; Russian translation, vols. 1–8, 1901–09), which contains extensive information on the lives and works of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. Fischer was also the author of works of literary history, including works dealing with Goethe, Lessing, Schiller, and Shakespeare.
