On southern border of AL; organized Dec 10, 1868 from Baldwin and Conecuh counties. Name Origin: For Escambia River, probably a Spanish rendering of a Choctaw or Chickasaw Indian word but origin is in dispute. There may be a connection to Spanish cambiar 'to exchange, trade, barter.' River formerly called the Pensacola.

On northwestern border of FL, bordered on the south by the Gulf of Mexico; original county; organized Jul 21, 1822 (prior to statehood). It is one of the two first counties; the other is Saint Johns.
