Esmeraldas

 

a city in northwestern Ecuador. Capital of Esmeraldas Province. Population, 60,000 (1974). The city is a port on Ecuador’s Pacific coast, at the mouth of the Esmeraldas River. It is linked by a highway with the city of Quito. The commercial center of agricultural and lumbering regions, Esmeraldas has a pulp and paper industry and an oil-refining industry.
