Other cattle with complete esophageal obstruction without movement were subjected for
esophagotomy.
Surgery was consulted and the metallic spring (Figure 4) was removed from the upper thoracic esophagus via cervical
esophagotomy.
A postoperative contrast esophagram showed contrast extravasation at the
esophagotomy site.
(c) Insertion of an anvil attached with a thread through an
esophagotomy at the anterior wall of the esophagus.
(6) If a denture is found via rigid esophagoscopy to be deeply embedded in the wall of the esophagus, then
esophagotomy is the best option for removing the dental prosthesis.
--Nasogastric or
esophagotomy tube recommendations:
Of the 22 animals that underwent cervical
esophagotomy, thirteen were operated in standing position (10 cattle and 03 buffaloes) (Fig.
If the foreign body is not movable along the esophagus and when stomach tube of sufficient length is not available, it is recommended to undertake
esophagotomy, as pushing improperly, may result in obstruction of thoracic esophagus.
Mid cervical
esophagotomy was taken up under Xylazine sedation and local linear infiltration analgesia with 2% Lignocaine hcl along the dorsal border of jugular furrow.
The foreign body was removed by
esophagotomy by temporarily holding the cranial and caudal esophageal lumen.
The risk of post-operative complications associated with
esophagotomy are incisional dehiscence, stricture formation, cellulitis, esophageal diverticulum, anorexia with failure to gain weight and fistula formation as recorded by Smith (2008).
Surgical techniques for removal of esophageal foreign bodies include per oral retrieval, endoscopy, transthoracic
esophagotomy and through gastrotomy removal depending upon type and location of foreign body.
