, city (1996 pop. 263,708), capital of Espírito Santo state, E Brazil, on an island in Espírito Santo Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of Brazil's chief ore ports and is linked by rail with rich iron deposits at Itabira, in Minas Gerais state.

Espírito Santo

 

a state in southeastern Brazil, on the periphery of the Brazilian Highlands and in the coastal lowland. Area, 45,600 sq km. Population, 1,776,000 (1977). Vitoria is the capital of the state and its principal port. The economy is based on the export of such crops as coffee, cacao, and sugarcane. Oil is extracted and monazite sand is mined in the state. Industry includes food processing and the production of textiles.
