Eure

 

a department in northern France, along the lower course of the Seine River. Area, 6,000 sq km. Population, 425,000 (1975). Evreux is the capital.

In 1968 the department’s industry employed 35 percent of the economically active population, and agriculture employed 19 percent. A variety of industries are located in the department’s cities: the production of wool fabrics and celluloid in Evreux and Louviers, machine building in Evreux and Breteuil, production of cotton fabrics in Fleury-sur-Andelle, and food processing and the manufacture of plastics in Ezy-sur-Eure. Eure’s agricultural activities include dairy farming and the cultivation of wheat, potatoes, and fodder crops.
