In basket stars (order Euryalae), these surfaces have an hourglass-shaped, streptospondylous articulation, which allows the arm to coil helically for maintaining posture and obtaining food (Macurda, 1976; Hendler and Miller, 1984; Dearborn et al., 1986; Emson et al., 1991).
