Evariste Lévi-Provençal(redirected from Evariste Levi-Provencal)
Born Jan. 4, 1894, in Algiers; died Mar. 23, 1956, in Paris. French Orientalist and Arabist, specialist in the history of the Maghreb and Muslim Spain in the Middle Ages.
Lévi-Provençal graduated from the University of Algiers and in 1920 became a professor at the Institute for Higher Studies in Rabat. From 1935 to 1940 he was a professor at the University of Algiers. From 1940 to 1944, Lévi-Provençal lived in France and in Egypt. In 1944 he became a professor at the Sorbonne. Lévi-Provençal was one of the initiators and editors of the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Islam. In 1954 he founded the journal Arabica. His chief work is The History of Muslim Spain.
