a Danish island with an area of approximately 3,000 sq km and a population, including small adjacent islands, of 448,100 (1977). The coast of Fyn is low-lying and indented by bays. The island is a morainal plain with hills that reach an elevation of 131 m. Most of the island is given over to cultivation of sugar beets, barley, and pastures. Dairy farming and swine raising play an important role in the economy. Fyn is linked with the Jutland Peninsula by bridges across the Lille Belt and with nearby islands, including Sjaelland, by ferry. The island’s principal city is Odense.
