An extension to CGI from Open Market that improves performance by maintaining persistent connections. Regular CGI exits after each request is completed, but FastCGI keeps the connection open and waits for the next request. See CGI script.

For production use, Apache or Lighttpd with FastCGI is recommended, but any web server with CGI or FastCGI support will work.
When compared to the original CGI 1.1 standard(5) the newer FastCGI interface(6) amortizes the cost of forking and starting a CGI process by allowing such processes to persist across requests.
