A test by means of actual or attempted flight to see how an aircraft, spacecraft, space-air vehicle, or missile flies.
A test of a component part of a flying vehicle, or of an object carried in such a vehicle, to determine its suitability or reliability in terms of its intended function by making it endure actual flight.

i. An actual test in the air to ascertain the serviceability of an aircraft after a major component change or repair, to ascertain flight characteristics, or to achieve other specified objectives.
ii. A test of a component of a flying vehicle, or of an object carried in such a vehicle, to determine its suitability, or reliability, in terms of its intended function by making it endure actual flight. An engine or radar under development may be carried on board another aircraft to confirm its performance.
iii. A flight-rating test for aircrew either to renew or issue their license or issue an additional endorsement.
