Floating Island

a carpet-like mass of aquatic and swamp plants that floats on the surface of a body of water. In waters rich in nutrient matter the vegetation includes bulrush, cattail, buckbean, and other rhizomatous plants and green mosses. Floating islands in waters poor in nutrient matter consist chiefly of sphagnum mosses. A floating island grows from the edges to the center, sometimes covering the entire body of water. Vegetation with a silty base forms free-floating masses after becoming submerged. Such masses are especially dangerous in reservoirs, and they impede navigation and the functioning of hydroelectric power plants.
